A drive into the high desert from Salta, Argentina tells you why it’s called a desert. Although the Andes mountains in the far distance are still covered with spring snow, down here, a hundred kilometers away, the river is already dry, even though it’s only the middle of October, one month into the southern spring.
The animals currently in the river bed migrate up the ever steeper slopes of the mountains in search of forage. We saw many cows and horses and donkeys high up the slopes. As our driver said, “They think they are goats.”
