Christ’s Head on a Wall, Atotonilco, Mexico

atotonilco Christ's head carvedAs we were walking out of the village of Atotonilco, near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, we saw this head of Christ. It seemed to have been carved from a tree root and stuck upon a wall which separated an orchard from the road into the village. The church in the village, The Sanctuary of Atotonilco, is a Unesco World Heritage site which features many beautiful frescoes which have been recently restored. It is definitely worth a visit. However, the work of a local artisan sometimes is just as beautiful, and more heartfelt for its humble surroundings.
